Technology can help people explore their world faster than any type of transportation and give people more information than any tour guide ever could. Go to a hotel’s website and you can take a virtual tour of the rooms and get information on all the attractions surrounding it. Google “Mount Everest” and get 5,000,000,000 search results on anything even remotely related to the mountain in under a second. Technology is all around us and if we learn to utilize it correctly, it could connect us to anything we want. Technology also helps me to reconnect with old friends I haven’t seen since kindergarten and connect with friends I see almost every day. Twitter and Facebook can be linked to any website so all my friends can see what I’m doing and I can see what my friends are doing.
The Internet also helps me to do what I’m doing right this very second: apply for scholarships and learn about new opportunities for higher education. One website can give me tons of scholarships to apply for and help the world doing it. DoSomething.org gives scholarships for making the world a better place. Companies give scholarships having students write essays or do volunteer work and realize what they’re capable of. If I hadn’t had to write an essay to apply for this scholarship, I wouldn’t have given another thought to all the advantages I have when it comes to technology helping me discover the world around me. Of course nothing beats actually getting out and exploring the world without holding onto your phone, but technology can help you connect with things that you never could by just getting out in the world and exploring.
Social media has also helped immensely in connecting me to the world around me. Take for example, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Most girls cringe at the thought of watching it because it lowers their self esteem so much, but all the girls watch it anyway. There is not one girl I follow on Twitter that does not live tweet. I will admit, I do the same. Television, partnered with Twitter, connect me to all the other girls who have the same self-esteem issues as me. It lets me know that I’m not alone. The Internet makes you more vulnerable. You’re in this community where you can say anything and can hide behind a screen to do it. Imagine all the people who would never know what others are going through if there was not social media. All the people who would have no idea that another person is happy, or hurting, or failing or accomplishing in their life. Social media used wrong is not a good thing and can lead to a lot of consequences and drama, but social media used correctly is like opening a gate to other people and connecting to their lives. The Internet is a tool that can be used to connect you to a world you might not otherwise be able to see. It gives you opportunities that you might not have had without the use of it.
Technology should be celebrated and used correctly. The reason a lot of people are so against it is because there are a lot of people out there who use it to hurt others or put all their information out there for anyone to see. They don’t realize how they could be using it to connect to the world around them better. They don’t realize how they can take advantage of technology without technology taking advantage of them.
